Final Draft

This is my final draft, it is a slightly simpler unrefined version of my final piece. It gives a good idea of what my final is but hasn't been polished with better details.

Drafting

At first, I started with the idea of a map an it then moved on to having other photos over the top so I came up with the idea of making my book cover a map, with different paintings ( such as mountains,  forests, and certain iconography from the book) scattered over it loosely so it looked like the top of a messy desk.

And this was going to be my design

But I drew some of the smaller paintings for it I saw that the mountains I drew could be the entire cover, with a massive mountain range rolling across the background. I thought it would work better as the graphic because it was more in the background and let the name stand out.

I drew a few ideas for the mountains and came up with a rough, rough draft, which is the bottom picture.

Colour choices

For my Monochromatic pice, I made it in a sketchy style with a hand drawn title and other parts. I sketched a mountain range for the background from a part of Wales I was in and I added my handwritten title in.

For my triadic, I used purple, orange and green. I used the green for the main part of the mountains as that's realistic and added a strong contrast by shading the darker areas with an orange. The sky I made light purple and I think it works well as it keeps in the background allowing the mountains to come more to the front.

On the complimentary, I decided to go for a more obscure  colour on the mountains with a normal colour sky. The cover stands out and is bright but I feel that it wouldn't represent the book that well as it's too indicative of the desert.

This is the analogous colour scheme, I feel like it worked well. I used green based colours with a turquoise for the sky. The different shades of green allowed me to shade the mountains well making them look more 3D and stand out better than they otherwise would.

Artist Emulation

I made my own book cover, using the painting style of John Howe. I used watercolour again to make a painting for the front cover, for the spine and the back cover. I edited my paintings in photoshop to make them stand out better and then basing the layout on one of my scamp designs, placed them in the correct places and made it look as good as possible.

Artist Copy

This is my artist copy that I did of 'elven boat' by John Howe. I liked it and the look of it relates to my subject matter, he used watercolour to pain this so I also used watercolour to recreate it as best I could.

Digital Type choices

For my Digital type choices, I found 10 different fonts and made an analytical decision on which I could use for my work and why the would or wouldn't work.

Typography Moodboard

This is my mood board and it's a collection of font styles and iconography that is related 'The Silmarillion' and that I get get ideas from for my my own typeface.

Type choice

This is my type that I made.
I drew the lowercase with a dip pen to get a nice thick thin contrast and a handwritten style as it fits with the theme of the book, like it's someones account of the stories.
or the uppercase I took inspiration from calligraphy work and the very intricate handwritten capitals, I tried to emulate this style but slightly simpler with. I only drew the outlines and then filled it in using photoshop after editing the levels to make the font a rich black.

Book Cover Scamps

These are my scamps of existing book covers. I used Pencil, watercolour and fineliner to draw them.
